Council noted Good Things at St. Jacob’s this past month: youth confirmation classes are going well, Easter services and Sunrise service attendance were both up from previous years and the children’s choir did an excellent job singing on Easter Sunday. A special thank you to Frances Slice for taking care of the church office duties while Sherry Floyd enjoyed a vacation.

Ministry Teams – Thank you to those that submitted monthly reports. A few highlights of the monthly reports are included below:

• Staff Support – Sherry Floyd was recognized on Administrative Assistant Day. The deadline has been extended for accepting applications for a Director of Christian Education/Youth Minister.

• Spiritual Life – The Worship Planning Team is scheduled to meet with Pastor David on May 1, 2018. Volunteers are needed to assist with children’s choir.

• Witness – The Lutheran Women fundraiser meal was written up in The Chapin Times for two consecutive weeks.

After lunch the group traveled to the “Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden” in Bishopville, SC. Mr. Pearl Fryar and his garden are internationally recognized. The garden draws visitors from around the globe. Davis Brown provided the devotion for the group. A special thank you to Gerald Lindler for graciously driving the St. Jacob’s bus!

• Lutheran Women are making preparations for the Ladies Brunch on June 23, 2018 at 11 am. Lutheran Women’s Sunday went well and June Lindler did an outstanding job presenting the sermon.

• The Youth Group was not able to attend the zoo trip due to bad weather. They did enjoy a Bible study on April 15th at Sonic.

• Support of Ministries – Technology Team has updated the St. Jacob’s website and the Communication Team reports the total church membership is 360.

Old Business – Defibrillator pads have been ordered. Additional copies of the cemetery layout are being created for the church. Larry will attend the Carolinas Convocation in May and also the NALC convocation in August. A list of the ministry teams and members was presented and reviewed by council.

Invite your first

Posted May 30, 2018 By admin

A study done several years ago of Christians and evangelism found that Christians who attend worship regularly within main line denominational churches seldom invite others to worship with them. Some surveys indicate the average Lutheran Church member invites only 1.2 people to worship in their lifetime.

One of the Core Values of the North American Lutheran Church is to be a mission driven church. Being mission driven means many things. One of these is that we are a church committed to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. One of the simplest and most effective ways to do this is to invite friends and neighbors to worship with us.

During the summer months, Pastor David is challenging each church family member to invite at least one person per month to worship with us. It can be someone you have known for a long time, someone you recently met, or perhaps even a stranger who was in line ahead of you at the market. Whoever it is, invite them. But don’t be discouraged if they don’t come, just keep inviting. Invite your one, and share the good news!

Vacation Bible School

GAME ON is scheduled for July 15-19. We invite your kids to grab their megaphones, lace up their cleats, and tune up their instruments. As they fill up the offensive line, sideline, and drum line, your players, cheerleaders, and band members will realize God has given them His ultimate playbook. He wants them to join His team, train hard, celebrate salvation, and encourage one another. Get in the spirit with Game On – Gearing Up for Life’s Big Game!

(2 Peter 1:3) Adults don’t forget we will also be having classes for you too, so Game On.

Noisy offering in June

Posted May 30, 2018 By admin

During the children’s sermon each Sunday in June we will have a noisy offering to repair the roof at the Lutheran church in Boma, Congo. All you need to do is bring plenty of change and throw it in the buckets as the kids come to collect it from you.

What is your favorite hymn?

Posted May 30, 2018 By admin

What is your favorite hymn? Haven’t heard it sung lately? Wish we’d sing it more often? Well, here’s your chance. This summer, we’d like to sing YOUR favorite hymns as anthems. Put the title of the hymn (or lyrics if you’re unsure of the title) into the box in the narthex. Then, one of the children will draw a hymn from the box and that hymn will be the anthem for the following Sunday. So don’t be shy – tell us those favorite hymns!

Congo Missions

The monies received in the pickle jar each week will benefit the orphan children in Congo as we provide food and other necessities.

The Children’s Choir

Posted May 30, 2018 By admin

The Children’s Choir will practice on the 1st & 3rd Sundays of each month, from 5-6 pm, in the church. Also, we will continue to have a short, 10-minute music session at the beginning of Sunday School from 9:15 to 9:25 AM in the nave of the church, after which your children will be accompanied to their classrooms.

Coffee Talk

Posted May 30, 2018 By admin

As a means for communication and information, once per quarter, Pastor David, will be sharing thoughts and insights with our church family, and answering a few questions along the way. This “Coffee Talk” will take place during our coffee hour every third month. Following the worship service on June 3 make plans to attend. The session will last about 30 minutes in the fellowship hall.

Worship and Music News

I want to give a huge shout-out to the Children’s Choir! They are a fantastic group of young Christians (and believe me, they know how to spell that word!) and I am enjoying every minute I have with them.

To the congregation, thank you so much for your support of this ministry. To the parents and grandparents who bring the children to practice, thank you for encouraging them to participate. To those who have volunteered to assist at the practices, your presence is invaluable; it doesn’t just help me out, it also shows the children that you see the Children’s Choir as an important part of ministry at St. Jacob’s.

Just a reminder that you still have time to put your favorite hymn in the box in the Narthex. To fill all the anthem spots for June, July and August (except for Homecoming, which will have its own special music), we need 12 hymns! Hopefully, there will be more than 12 hymns in the box, in which case, we will use any remaining ones as communion hymns this fall. The box will be in the Narthex all summer, so you can drop a hymn in at any time.

Soli Deo Gloria,

Laurie
