We praise God for how He has worked in our hearts for the past weeks during our Family & Youth gatherings. These past weeks, we’ve had the opportunity to dive into the different passages that make up our vision.
For families at St. Jacob’s to dive headfirst into the surpassing knowledge of the love of Christ for sinners and sufferers. And to become lights to their families and the world around them. (Matthew 11:28-30, Ephesians 3:17-19, John 6:35-40, Matthew 5:13-16)
It has been an excellent opportunity to spend Tuesday nights with the families at St. Jacob’s as we wrestled with the different promises and commands that our Heavenly Father has given us. And to see more clearly whom He says He is and how He views us. I pray that as this ministry continues, many more families will join us as we continue down this path of knowing Him and making Him known.
Starting on the 5th of July, we will be diving into a new series on “Heroes in the Bible,” not necessarily heroes for what they have done, but for how they embraced God’s plan for their lives and how God uses them for His glory. I hope to see you there as we learn more about the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit through different unique people that He lifted through scripture and what their lives can teach us.
Church family, would you continue to pray for the inward workings of the Holy Spirit in our lives as we seek to dive headfirst into the surpassing love of Christ for sinners and sufferers?

Up and Going
Posted July 9, 2022 By adminThe June Up and Going Meeting was held in the Fellowship Hall on June 9 at 11 AM with 21 members and guests attending. Announcements were given and business was conducted. A Father’s Day devotion with all praying together The Lord’s Prayer was given by Helen. Matt, St.Jacob’s Director of Youth and Family Ministries gave the program, Matt shared with us his life history and his Faith Journey. St. Jacob’s has been chosen and blessed to be a part of Matt’s continuing Faith Journey. Up and Going appreciates Matt sharing his life experiences and Faith Journey with us. We hope that Matt will continue to be a part of Up and Going activities.
A delicious covered dish meal with desserts was enjoyed by all.
The next Up and Going meeting is scheduled for Thursday July14 at 11 AM in the Fellowship Hall. Everyone is asked to bring their favorite picnic items for lunch together. Pastor David will present the program.

Lutheran Men BBQ Pork and Hash Fundraiser
Posted May 25, 2022 By adminThe Lutheran Men are planning their annual BBQ pork and hash fundraiser.
The cost is $10.00 for a pound of BBQ and $8.00 for a quart of hash.
As in the past, orders can be picked up at the church Fellowship Hall on Friday, June 24th between 3-6:00 PM and Saturday, June 25th between 8-10 AM. Please see a member of the LUTHERAN MEN to place your order. The deadline is Sunday, June 12th.
Tuesday Evening Family Ministry

Families share a time together exploring the depths of the Christian faith and growing in their relationship with Christ as his disciples. We gather on Tuesday evenings at 7 PM in the Fellowship Hall, enjoying games, music, snacks and learning more about how we can grow together as children of God. Please plan to join us. Up And Going
Posted May 25, 2022 By adminOn a beautiful May 2nd, Monday morning, 48 Up and Going members and guests gathered in the Fellowship Hall to enjoy a May Day Gathering. A Traditional May Day Pole was on display to help us get into the May Day Spirit and everyone was dressed in Spring attire.
The Chapin Chirpers provided entertaining music and a delightful musical program entitled “Calendar Girl”. The room was filled with singing, clapping and laughter. Our thanks to the Chapin Chirpers for honoring us with their music that filled our faces with smiles and our hearts with happiness.
Then we enjoyed a bountiful lunch of different sandwiches, chips, vegetable trays and dips, pickles, topped off with cherry or apple dump cake with whipped topping and cookies. Tea and water were served for our enjoyment. Thank you to Joan and Gary Marco for coordinating the lunch for us.
What a wonderful day of hugs, laughter, food, fun and fellowship enjoyed by all! We departed with happy spirits, so thankful to God to be together in person again. We have missed each other’s company.
The next meeting of the Up and Going will be Thursday June 9th at 11AM. This is a covered dish meal and Pastor David will present the program on St. Jacob’s Treasure–Older, Wiser Lutherans. Hope to see you there.
Carolina Missions Region Convocation
Posted May 25, 2022 By adminGoing to the Carolinas Mission Region Convocation is a lot like going to a family reunion. You get to see and catch up with people that you have not seen for a while. Along those lines, it was Pastor Marty Ramey and Pastor Dawn Rister. Also like a family reunion, the host congregation provides the evening meal on Friday night, this year it was bar-b-que and smoked turkey. However, unlike most family get to gathers, there is some business that must be attended to.
This year there were four items that needed to be voted on:
- Approval of the budget for next year-it was approved as presented by the Treasurer and Finance Team.
- Minor corrections to the CMR Constitution (mostly substituting “CMR” for “Carolinas Mission Region”)-this was also approved.
- Disbursement of unused funds in this year’s budget (estimated to be about twenty thousand dollars). The unused funds will be split among the CMR Ministry Partners.
- For the South Carolina Mission District, we needed to elect a lay person to serve on the Executive Committee. Larry Shull, whose previous term was expiring, was re-elected.
- Lastly, for the South Carolina Mission District, there is a proposal to get together a group to go to Kentucky sometime in the late summer early fall in coordination with NALC Disaster Relief to continue efforts rebuilding after tornados struck late last year.
Bishop Selbo gave the sermon at the opening Worship Service, and set the tone for the need to make Disciples and then go out and make other Disciples. After Worship Service, Rev. Dr. David Wendel introduced some new tools to help congregations to that end. The first is a study guide/book, Life-to-Life Discipleship, that was in the works for a long time. You can get an electronic copy of it off the NALC website. Also, he spoke about a new tool that is available to all congregations that provides a demographic, political, and lifestyle overview of people living within a fifteen minute drive of the congregation. This tool allows for better informed and targeted outreach programs.
The Lutheran Men (Bruce), Lutheran Women, and Youth Director (Melina Corn) all gave reports about their accomplishments over the last year. There was also a question and answer session with Bishop Selbo, Rev. Dr. David Wendel, and the new Assistant to the Bishop, Pastor Bill White. Mary Bates with NALC Disaster Relief gave a report about their ongoing mission.
Lutheran Family Services of the Carolinas showed a video about their work with people that have had traumatic brain injuries. Sola Publishing had a large display showing off some of their available books. Lutheran Military Veterans and Family Ministries related their ongoing efforts helping returning veterans and their families through consoling and other charity work. They even brought one of their therapy dogs, “Patrick Dooly”.
NALC partners in Global Missions gave presentations about their ministry and how to get involved. As a quick overview, these included our own Pastor Nuottila representing Congo Mission International, and Pastor Heidi Punt representing SMI Haiti. Awakening Lives to World Missions (ALWM) primarily works in Asia and helps churches in the states begin or revitalize their global mission efforts. India Transformed works to educate the poor and lowest caste in India, while walking a thin line due to government restrictions on evangelization. Lastly, The Spiritual Orphans Network (SON) ministers to those that live in Eastern Europe and are lacking in Christian support due to the legacy of religious purges and militant atheism of the Soviet Union. Currently, they are focused on the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. I have included links to the ministry partner websites below if you would like to learn more about them. Also, if you would like to go next year, just let the Council know. Anyone can attend, even though we need only one lay delegate.

St Jacob’s Mercy Boxes for We Care

1. Pick up from the church or purchase a medium sized box from Lowe’s. The boxes are located in the table and chair storage room in the Fellowship Hall.
2. Using the list below, shop for the food items that will feed a family for one week.
3. Return the box to the Fellowship Hall by Sunday evening.
4. Do not seal the top of the box!
5. On Monday morning, a fresh loaf of bread will be added to the box, the box sealed, and delivered to We Care.
Shopping suggestion: Food Lion Chapin – purchase Food Lion brands when possible for best pricing. Almost all items are located on two aisles.
All boxes must have these items to make the meals for the week:
Canned Vegetables:
1 large can green beans
1 large can sweet potatoes / yams
2 cans corn
1 can of lima beans
2 cans of peas / carrots
1 large can baked beans
Pasta Sauce:
2 jars Spaghetti Sauce with Meat (flavoring)
1 jar Alfredo Sauce 2 cans corn 1 can of lima beans
Pasta:
1 lb. pasta
1 bag egg noodles
1 container instant rice
2 pouches instant mashed potatoes
1 Mac and Cheese – complete meal box
Canned Meats:
1 can Spam
3 cans Vienna sausage
4 cans cooked chicken
3 cans tuna
1 large can beef stew
Canned Fruit:
1 large jar applesauce
1 can mixed fruit / fruit cocktail
Extra items you can add:
Grits / oatmeal / boxed cereal
Peanut butter and jelly
Saltines / crackers
Salt / pepper
Why are we putting food in boxes?
We Care has a mobile delivery service that transports food to Whitmire and other areas. They have a number of families that aren’t able to come to the delivery locations so the boxes make it much easier for food to be delivered to families in need. The complete boxes make sure each family has food for an entire week.
What if I find items on sale and can buy extra in bulk?
Great! But store it at your home to add to your next box. We currently aren’t able to store extra items to put together boxes at the church.
I’d like to help deliver the boxes to We Care.

Chapin Exalting Christ Together
Posted May 10, 2022 By adminThe first Thursday of May is set aside each year as a National Day of Prayer. The Chapin Ministerial Association will be hosting an event, calling all Christians in Chapin to gather under the theme, “Chapin Exalting Christ Together.” This event will take place at Mt. Horeb Lutheran Church beginning at 6:30 PM. Pastor David will be offering prayer on behalf of our law enforcement, first responders, and military personal. Plan to gather with our community and lift our prayers to the One God who cares for all and has offered His Son for the sake of us all.
