Up And Going

The March 9th meeting of the Up and Going was held in the Fellowship Hall at 11 am. Devotions with prayer was given by Team Leader, Helen. Devotions were on The Purim Holiday from the book of Esther, also a reading, Be Open to Giving and Receiving Grace, with verses from Ephesians.
A covered dish meal was enjoyed by all. Members gathered at the worktables to assemble Hospice Easter Bags for area Hospice patients. We might be older but not slower workers.
In about one hour, our 14 members and guests assembled 100 Easter bags consisting of a pretty cello bag with a layer of Easter grass, then filled with wrapped candies, nuts, cookies, etc. then tied with a beautiful multi-colored ribbons and bows holding a handwritten Easter Blessing.
They were so pretty. Gary and Joan Marco will deliver the bags to the appropriate distribution facilities for delivery by hospice workers before Easter. Thank you all for a job well done.
The April Meeting will be held on Thursday, April 13th at 10am (NOTE TIME CHANGE) in the Fellowship Hall. We will have an hour chair yoga class for our information and enjoyment. Lunch will follow. Please bring a salad, side item or dessert for sharing. Please plan to attend and enjoy this class. Dress is comfortable pants and shirts so you will be comfortable.

Lutheran Men Sausage Sale

Posted March 9, 2023 By admin

In February, our St. Jacob’s Men had another successful sausage sale. All together they continued to supply our church family with delicious pork sausage, producing well over seven hundred pounds. Included in this tally was enough sausage to supply our annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper and Easter morning breakfast. Of course, all this would not be possible without the assistance of several of our Lutheran Women who help out each year by weighing and packaging the sausage in 1 pound containers. They are always a great help in this project. Thank you to all who helped out!

Worship services at Generations Assisted Care of Chapin have made a great difference in the lives of many folks who are not able to attend worship at their home church. St. Jacob’s members are invited and certainly encouraged to share this experience with our friends just down the road. Our next worship opportunities will be on Sunday, March 5th and March 19th at 1:00PM. Join us in the lobby at Generations.

Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

Posted February 17, 2023 By admin

Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, is observed in various Christian denominations. The name “Shrove” Tuesday is derived from the Old English verb “shrive,” It refers to the confession of sins as a preparation for Lent, a usual practice in Europe in the Middle Ages. Although the day is sometimes still used for self-examination and introspection, Shrove Tuesday eventually acquired the character of a carnival or festival (Mardi Gras) in many places and is often celebrated with parades. As the final day before the austerity of the Lenten fast, Shrove Tuesday (also known as Fat Tuesday in Latin America) also has many customs pertaining to food. Pancakes are traditional in a number of countries because eggs, sugar, and fat, commonly forbidden during the Lenten fast, are to be used up so they will not go to waste or become a temptation to break the fast.
Also a part of the ritual of Shrove Tuesday, is the burning of the previous year’s Holy week palms, finalizing the previous year’s Lenten sacrifice. Shrove Tuesday marks the beginning of the forty Day season of Lent. This it the time when we contemplate the 40 days that Jesus spent fasting in the desert where he resisted the temptation of Satan.
As is our tradition, our Lutheran Men’s group will serve up a delicious pancake supper with all the trimmings featuring their homemade pork sausage for us to enjoy. We will also observe the ritual of burning last year’s palms to make the ashes for our Ash Wednesday imposition of ashes. The burning of palms will begin at 6:30PM on February 21st, with our pancake supper immediately following. Come enjoy this night of fellowship with your church family.

News from Up and Going

Posted February 1, 2023 By admin

The Up and Going began the new year of 2023 on January 12th at 11:00AM in the Fellowship Hall. Decorations of snowmen greeted thirteen members and guests. Lunch was the Soup Pot, served by Ann Lindler and filled with delicious vegetables and beef, Appropriate side items and wonderful desserts, all provided by attendees.
Team Leader, Helen L. Lindler welcomed everyone and gave a devotion from the book, Faith Alone, by Martin Luther. Devotions ended with prayer. The treasurer’s report was given by Gary. Business was conducted and prayer was requested for the sick, our church and church family.
We were honored to have Administrative Assistant Jean join us for lunch. During lunch, we discovered that Jean is kin to a large number of our Up and Going members.
After lunch, Joan and Gary hosted Bingo, gifts were provided by those attending. Bingo was fun and opening and choosing gifts was a hard decision. The laughter and comments were the highlight of the day. All agreed that the Soup Pot lunch was especially delicious, and the Bingo games were a tremendous hit. A motion was made and an affirmative vote was taken that every January meeting will consist of a Soup Pot lunch and Bingo games. Members and guests will provide items for the Soup Pot and prizes for Bingo.
We decided to once again prepare and provide Easter bags for hospice patients. See Joan Marco for items needed. This is a project especially dear to the Up and Going and we look forward to providing these Easter bags for our hospice friends. God richly blessed our meeting.

Call To Prayer

Posted January 5, 2023 By admin

Pastor David is calling all members of St. Jacob’s to pray for St. Jacob’s spiritual health, vision, and growth. Everyone who is willing to gather for Prayer, or come at a time when you can be alone, is encouraged to do so each Monday afternoon or evening in January.  Beginning on January 9th, the Church sanctuary will be open
from 12:00PM to 5:30PM.  You may simply enter the nave, take a seat in the
pews and lift up your prayers to our God who promises to hear you. As the evangelist writes in the book of James, “The prayer of a righteous person has
great power as it is working” (James 5:16).

All St. Jacob’s men are encouraged to participate in the first annual South Carolina Mission District Men’s Retreat. The retreat will take place at Camp Longridge in Ridgeway, SC on the weekend of April 14-16. The cost for the weekend is $125.00 per person and includes meals and lodging. The theme for the retreat is “Becoming Fishers of Men.” St. Jacob’s and St. Peter’s Lutheran Churches in Chapin are the host congregations for the weekend. Registration brochures will be available beginning Sunday, January 1, 2023. More information will follow in the St. Jacob’s Newsletter and South Carolina Mission District Facebook page.
