October is STEWARDSHIP month

Posted September 25, 2018 By admin

October is STEWARDSHIP month here at Saint Jacob’s, the time of year when we prayerfully consider how we can use our God given gifts of time, talent and possessions to serve God and our neighbors as STEWARDS of His Kingdom here on earth. The stewardship team has chosen this year to use the offertory prayer as our theme for STEWARDSHIP month.
Merciful Father, we offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us – ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
In these words, we declare to all that STEWARDSHIP is a way of life, not just something that we talk about, but something that we live out in our daily lives. These words declare our true belief that all that we have is a gift from God, and we give back to Him only a portion, asking Him to “receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord” – the GREATEST GIFT OF ALL!
There is much work to do and many ministries that require our time, talent and abilities here at Saint Jacob’s. We need teachers, grass cutters, cooks and dish washers, lay readers, acolytes and greeters, team leaders and council members, computer geeks, singers and musicians, bell ringers and bus drivers, prayer warriors and accountants. The list can go on and on, but you know what is needed, and you also know what you are capable of and willing to offer.
It has been said countless times by some, “I would like to do that, but I just don’t think I am the right person”, or “I would do that, but there are others here who can do it better than me.” You are a child of God, and He has given you one or many gifts. Remember, you are the STEWARD of that one, or those many gifts. Do not be afraid to use them in service to our Lord. Offer them with joy and thanksgiving!
We have provided a brief description of our teams, the name of the 2018 team leader, and the Council Representative for each ministry group. Please pray about how you will use your time and talents at St. Jacob’s in 2019 and fill out the Time & Talent form on the reverse and place it in the offering plate on any Sunday up to and including October 28th, the final Sunday of the month.

Thank you.
Your Stewardship Team

On Thursday, June 21st, fifteen members and guests boarded the St. Jacob’s Express for a day trip to NC.  Before departing, Helen gave the devotions entitled “360 Degrees of Praise”.  She challenged each of us to be observant and see and experience a new sight, sound of experience today.  She ended with prayer.  Off we went with Gerald driving the bus.  He took us on a scenic trip through Lake Lure and Chimney Rock, then on to Hendersonville to the Bay Breeze Seafood Restaurant for lunch.  All reports were that the food was plentiful and exceptionally delicious.  All enjoyed a leisurely lunch  before boarding the bus for the short ride to downtown Saluda, NC.  We enjoyed window shopping and visiting the various shops, while reliving other trips to Saluda.  Soon it was time to head home. The weather was HOT but no rain.  We had lots of ice cold bottled water and snacks  and chocolate chip cookies thanks to Davis. We enjoyed snacks and water and just relaxed as Gerald skillfully drove us safely home.  We departed at 8:30 AM and arrived back at 5 PM.  It was a full day with never enough time to do all that one would like to do.  Special appreciation to Gerald for driving for us and being so patient with us.
The 4-Churches meeting will be held on Thursday, August 23rd at 11:30 AM at Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, Little Mountain, SC.  Meat and Tea will be provided by Mt. Tabor.  Each attendee is asked to bring a dish to share. We will all meet at Mt. Tabor.

On Thursday, May 10th, twenty-one members and guests boarded the St. Jacob’s Express and headed for a day in Charleston. Ray Seay gave the devotions based on daily opportunities given by God for us to acknowledge God’s presence in our lives. He ended with prayer and asked God’s blessings on our trip. We arrived at Gilligan’s and enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch. We then headed to Wadmalaw Island for a tour of the Charleston Tea Plantation. We took the trolley ride tour through the tea fields, stopping at the greenhouse and other points of interest. The trolley driver gave a wonderfully informative commentary on the workings of the tea plantation. We got to see Steve, the expert tea blender and taster at work in the greenhouse and in the field. Our trolley was equipped with speakers so that we could enjoy a narrated tour by William Barclay Hall, founder of American Classic Tea and world renowned tea taster. We went on the Factory Tour, using flat screen TV, you could see the production process while overlooking the factory. Both were great tours! We enjoyed tea tasting and making purchases in the gift shop.

Then it was time to move on to the Angel Tree, the oldest Evergreen Oak tree in the country. Impressive and so beautiful. Then it was time to go home….

Thank you to Gerald for driving for us and being patient and helpful. We had a great time on our Charleston adventure.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, June 21. We will be going to Saluda, NC and having lunch in Hendersonville. Continue to watch your worship folder for more information.

Thanks, Helen

Twenty one (21) members and guests boarded the St. Jacob’s Express at 9:30 AM on April 12th to go to lunch at the Schoolhouse Bar-B-Q in Scranton, SC, then to Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden in Bishopville, SC. Davis gave the devotions based on asking God for His directions BEFORE we act. Adam and Eve forgot to ask BEFORE eating of the forbidden fruit, as did many others throughout the Bible, just as we do not ask. The time to ask God for help is before we act not after. Lots of good material to think about. Thank you Davis for devotions and planning our trip. The food at the Schoolhouse Bar-B-Q was overwhelmingly plentiful and SO delicious, especially the fried chicken and pork chops. We then went to Pearly Fryar Topiary Garden. The weather was perfect and the topiary garden was so impressive. Mr. Fryar came out and chatted with us for a long time. So much fun to casually walk through and enjoy Mr. Fryar’s handiwork, lots of hard work. Gerald provided transportation. We sincerely appreciate Gerald. Everyone returned home tired and happy.

On May 10, we have a day trip planned for the Charleston Tea Plantation and the Angel Tree in Charleston. Plan to leave St. Jacob’s at 8:30 AM. Lunch will be at Gilligan’s (Dutch treat). Gerald will drive the bus for us. Ray will provide devotions. All are invited.

The group met at 10AM on Friday, Feb 9th, in the Fellowship Hall to conduct business and to enjoy devotions given by Ray. He read from a booklet entitled “Jesus Calling”. His devotions reminded us to praise and thank God for His many blessings that we so often take for granted. We took a moment to thank God for the beautiful day that He had provided for our enjoyment.
Members voted to send a memorial in memory of Mr. Dan to St. Jacob’s Church Congo Mission Fund. We signed cards for Mrs. Floriede, Sandra, and Davis. Each person took a card to send to Hannah.
Twelve members and guests boarded the St. Jacob’s Express driven by Gerald and headed to The Brookland Banquet Facility in West Columbia
to enjoy a special treat Valentine’s Day seafood buffet, delicious food, beautiful surroundings and great service. Everyone enjoyed this event.
Now on to the Riverbanks Zoo to enjoy a “Free Friday at the Zoo”. We all got our exercise. We walked/took the trolley from one end of the zoo to the other. A special treat was the judged Orchid Show at the Botanical Gardens. The orchids were of all sizes and colors. God gave us the MOST beautiful day to enjoy the zoo. The animals were active, the people were friendly and the zoo was not so crowded. We all had a great time. Special “thank you” to Gerald.

March meeting will be on the 2nd Thursday, March 9th at 11AM in the Fellowship Hall. We will prepare Hospice Easter Bags (doing whatever is necessary to get the job done). Lunch will be a “Brown Bag Working Lunch”. Please bring an item that you would find in a brown bag lunch (sandwiches, chips, goodies, desserts, etc). Wear comfortable shoes and clothes because we will do lots of walking and moving about. Come join us, you will enjoy the fellowship and be so proud of the finished bags.

Happy New Year to each of you. Sixteen members gathered on Thursday, Jan 11, to enjoy a traditional Pot of Soup. Each brought items for the soup or an accompaniment or a dessert. The soup lunch was delicious. We sent lunches to Dan and Floriede and JL and Janet. Helen Gave the devotions on New Beginnings which our Baptism gives us every day. Business was conducted. We then got busy and made 185 bows for the Hospice Bags. Hospice Bags will be filled at the March meeting. If you would like to contribute individually wrapped candy, nuts, crackers, etc. please leave your gifts in the Fellowship Hall in the box provided and marked. We will make the additional bows needed then. We plan to make 250 Hospice Bags. If you are asked to handwrite a note of love to attach to each bag please consider helping us. These personal notes mean so much to the recipient. Simple acts of kindness show God’s love. The February Meeting is scheduled for FRIDAY, Feb 9. We plan to go by bus to free Friday at Riverbanks Zoo. Lunch will be at the Brookland Center. Ray will have devotions. Date will change if bad weather is predicted. More information will follow at a later date.

Up and Going in December

December 14th dawned a beautiful day, perfect for the Up and Going Christmas Celebration Meeting. The decorations were bright and pretty and put each in the mood to enjoy the celebration. We had 19 members and guest enjoy the festivities. Each member brought a dish of party finger food for lunch. The meal was bountiful and delicious. This comment was heard, “first time that I have enjoyed a FULL meal of just finger foods”. Bob Ziemer gave the devotions from the Advent Devotional, Waiting for the Lord 2017 by The Rev Dr Daniel M. Wendel. Bob and Gloria then led us in singing three Christmas Carols as they read a Christmas Story. A Chinese gift exchange followed. Everyone enjoyed this and the gifts were precious. Business was conducted. We were happy to have Pastor David and Sherry with us and hope that they will be able to join us each month. There was lots of laughter and happy comments as we cleaned up and put things back in order. The group departed filled with happy hearts and Christmas Spirit.
Also, a total of 90 pounds of food was collected for We Care. In November, we donated 45 pounds of food as well. I am SO proud of you for thinking of others in our community.
Our January meeting will be held on the 2nd Thursday, January 11 at 11AM in the Fellowship Hall. We will make Hospice Bag Bows and enjoy our traditional Soup Pot for lunch. Each member is asked to bring an item for the soup, sandwiches or bread or a dessert. You are invited to come and be with us.
Love,
Helen
