Summer Sermon Series

Posted May 30, 2018 By admin

On Sunday, June 3, Pastor David will begin a summer sermon series based on the Ten Commandments. Join us for worship this summer as we take a close look upon God’s expectations for His people, and the commandments that define God’s relationship with those who are saved by grace through faith in Christ.

From the Pastor

One of the things I enjoy most about being at St. Jacob’s is that our congregation has a very high regard for the sacraments. Holy Baptism and Holy Communion are the means through which God personally, physically and spiritually imparts His grace upon us. I am a bit concerned; however, at the amount of consecrated wine that seems to be wasted each week. Most members probably don’t realize it, but the majority of wine used each week is poured out, especially on days we serve by intinction. This is due to the size and shape of our chalices. But even on days we serve by individual cups, there is still too much wine left over.

Jesus says of the bread and wine, “This is my body…this is my blood.” Therefore, we are bound by faith to handle these elements with the utmost care and reverence. I have been working with members of the Altar Guild to address the problem of wastefulness. We have discussed simple modifications to the way we dispense the bread and wine. I believe that soon we should be practicing better stewardship of the communion elements.

Save the Date – October 13

The Stewardship Team is planning a Yard Sale again this year. One person’s junk is another person’s treasure. I’m sure you’ve heard that before, so ask yourself: “Have I cooked with it, worn it, displayed it, used it or read it within the last year?” If your answer is NO and the item is still in pretty good condition, then donate it to our yard sale.

Begin your spring cleaning now and donate those gently used items for our sale: clothing, books, house wares, dishes, glassware, furniture, and operable lawn equipment, but PLEASE no televisions, computers, printers or computer related items.

You may bring your items to the church and place them in the office garage.

Up and Going News

On Thursday, May 10th, twenty-one members and guests boarded the St. Jacob’s Express and headed for a day in Charleston. Ray Seay gave the devotions based on daily opportunities given by God for us to acknowledge God’s presence in our lives. He ended with prayer and asked God’s blessings on our trip. We arrived at Gilligan’s and enjoyed a delicious seafood lunch. We then headed to Wadmalaw Island for a tour of the Charleston Tea Plantation. We took the trolley ride tour through the tea fields, stopping at the greenhouse and other points of interest. The trolley driver gave a wonderfully informative commentary on the workings of the tea plantation. We got to see Steve, the expert tea blender and taster at work in the greenhouse and in the field. Our trolley was equipped with speakers so that we could enjoy a narrated tour by William Barclay Hall, founder of American Classic Tea and world renowned tea taster. We went on the Factory Tour, using flat screen TV, you could see the production process while overlooking the factory. Both were great tours! We enjoyed tea tasting and making purchases in the gift shop.

Then it was time to move on to the Angel Tree, the oldest Evergreen Oak tree in the country. Impressive and so beautiful. Then it was time to go home….

Thank you to Gerald for driving for us and being patient and helpful. We had a great time on our Charleston adventure.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday, June 21. We will be going to Saluda, NC and having lunch in Hendersonville. Continue to watch your worship folder for more information.

Thanks, Helen

Invite your first

Posted May 30, 2018 By admin

A study done several years ago of Christians and evangelism found that Christians who attend worship regularly within main line denominational churches seldom invite others to worship with them. Some surveys indicate the average Lutheran Church member invites only 1.2 people to worship in their lifetime.

One of the Core Values of the North American Lutheran Church is to be a mission driven church. Being mission driven means many things. One of these is that we are a church committed to sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. One of the simplest and most effective ways to do this is to invite friends and neighbors to worship with us.

During the summer months, Pastor David is challenging each church family member to invite at least one person per month to worship with us. It can be someone you have known for a long time, someone you recently met, or perhaps even a stranger who was in line ahead of you at the market. Whoever it is, invite them. But don’t be discouraged if they don’t come, just keep inviting. Invite your one, and share the good news!

GAME ON is scheduled for July 15-19. We invite your kids to grab their megaphones, lace up their cleats, and tune up their instruments. As they fill up the offensive line, sideline, and drum line, your players, cheerleaders, and band members will realize God has given them His ultimate playbook. He wants them to join His team, train hard, celebrate salvation, and encourage one another. Get in the spirit with Game On – Gearing Up for Life’s Big Game!

(2 Peter 1:3) Adults don’t forget we will also be having classes for you too, so Game On.

Noisy offering in June

Posted May 30, 2018 By admin

During the children’s sermon each Sunday in June we will have a noisy offering to repair the roof at the Lutheran church in Boma, Congo. All you need to do is bring plenty of change and throw it in the buckets as the kids come to collect it from you.
